Awaken the senses with West Auckland waterfalls

Be Active Five Ways to Wellbeing
Take notice

Awaken the senses with these West Auckland waterfalls, both of which have a glorious backdrop of the Waitakere ranges. The ranges reach 450m above sea level and cover 16,000 hectares of native rainforest (equivalent to approximately 16,000 rugby union fields!), which receives about 2,000mm of rainfall annually. The ranges are a special, protected nature reserve which is home to the magnificent, mighty and largest forest tree in NZ, Kauri. Kauri are some of the largest in the world and are truely something to behold. Their trunks grow up to 16m wide, standing up to 50m tall and can live for around 2,000 years. Unfortunately, Kauri are struggling with a disease called ‘Kauri dieback’. When soil is spread around by footwear, animals, equipment and vehicles the disease is spread easily, therefore, keep to tracks when walking the area and clean your shoes. Kia Ora, thank you.

Kitekite Falls

West Auckland waterfall, Kitekite Falls – A rejuvenating, day walk in the Waikatere Ranges which begins at the end of Glen Esk Rd and takes around 60 mins. The calm of the rainforest awakens the senses and beautiful native aroma makes you want to breathe it all in. The track from the start increases gradually and has two stream crossings – if you’re not a confident walker or its been raining, please be mindful, take care and walk to your ability. The cascading Kitekite Falls can be viewed and swam in from the bottom and the top – there is a steep, short walk called Connect Track which will take you to the top with an ‘infinity’ swimming hole and epic views back out over the Waikatere Ranges – totally worth the effort!

Mokoroa Falls

Access to Mokoroa Falls via surrounding walking tracks are currently closed to manage the impact of Kauri dieback disease, watch this space for updates. Its a beautiful little pocket of New Zealand thats worth waiting for.
