Tasman Lookout Path
Tasman Lookout Path is one of West Aucklands coastal walks – a fantastic track for adults and kids alike, with so much to find here (pack your togs)! The steep track at the beginning rewards you with uninterrupted views back over Piha beach and the majestic lion rock. Along the path you’ll notice there is plenty of rejuvenating native forest and a great view Taitomo island with its natural key hole tunnel. The island can be walked around at low tide and the tunnel observed, but also has nesting rare birds so it’s best not to be climbed. Further on ahead, is The Gap and The Blue Pool, the gap whooshes water through with the swells of the sea and creates a blow hole – heaps of fun to be observed, its also a great spot for cooling off and having a swim.
Te Henga Walkway
Te Henga walkway follows the cliff tops and is a small part of the Hillary Trail through the Waitakere Ranges with fantastic ocean views. The trail runs between Muriwai and Te Henga Bethells beach. It takes around 3.5 hours and is best to complete in dry weather as there are parts that can become slippery – there are also steep sections you’ll need to scale! You’ll cross a footbridge over the Waitākere River, check out the dunes and may even get a little bird watching in. A great little getaway when you need to unwind, recharge and lift your spirits! Packing well on West Aucklands coastal walks, is essential.
Maukatia Gannet Path
Maukatia Gannet Path is a little track, fantastic for kids especially as it begins and ends with a wonderful playground (beside the carpark), plus short and entertaining enough to hold their attention spans! It loops around a short path boasting panoramic views of the Tasman Sea and over Muriwai. Also from August to March a bustling gannet colony of over 1,000 birds. It’s important to respect the wildlife and their home, by not disturbing or feeding them, is important for their wellbeing. To get the path, follow the signs to Maukatia / Māori bay. The little track has a short section of beautiful native bush and loads of views to enjoy. Pack a picnic and take your time! Less than an hour from Auckland, why not?
