Restorative Tiritiri Matangi Island
If you love native birds – restorative Tiritiri Matangi Island is the place to be! Located just off the hibiscus coast, the island is a scientific reserve due to the extremely successful nature and conversation efforts made here. Predators have been cleared off the island, and what was once farmland has been restored to native bush.
This healed island is a world-class, open wildlife sanctuary, now thick with regenerated native bush and home to many rare NZ native birds. From the Tiritiri Matangi Island website, you can download a checklist for the birds, to see how many you can find, including some of New Zealand’s most endangered birds – takahē, kōkako, saddleback/tīeke and hihi/stitchbird, as well as our very own dinosaur – okay, reptile might be more accurate, but not as fun – the seriously un-fearsome, tuatara.
Head down to Hobbs beach for a Holy Moly! It is gorgeous! (italics, underlined) moment, and water you can see straight through. Snorkelling, swimming and fishing here are highly recommended. With the coastline full of rocky outcrops and rock pools are in abundance – these are heaps of fun to explore and play in.
There are number of lovely walks to take, including paths to the oldest working lighthouse in New Zealand – only 40mins from Tiritiri wharf. The longest walk to take on Tiritiri Matangi is the ‘three hour loop track’ – the Kawerau Track, to Northeast Bay Track, to the lighthouse, which is a circular route around the island. Remember, it’s always important to pack well for outings in NZ.
