Mind, Body & Soul in the Hunua Ranges
The Hunua Ranges is a regional park which offers lush forest ft. splendid kauri trees, sparkling rivers and streams, stunning views and a quite magnificent waterfall. Get amongst it and nourish your mind, body and soul in this very special little pocket of Aotearoa. Head off for a walk or jump on your mountain bike for some time in the beautiful native bush! This is wonderful place for picnicking at several picnic areas, fishing with four large reservoirs to choose from, swimming in the rivers and streams, and there are multiple campsites too – time to get packing! What will you do?
A few of Hunua Ranges walks
Hunua Falls Loop Walk
A lovely, well cared-for, short walk up to fantastic viewing platform to the waterfall. With lots of surrounding native bush, immerse yourself in this little walk and take in both the softness and force of nature.
Cossey-Massey Loop Track
As the name suggests, this loop walk is a little bit of each of the Cossey and Massey tracks. Taking around 3 hours to complete, remember to pack well and just FYI there is a creek to cross too! If you’re nimble enough to skip across the rocks you won’t get wet feet. There are gorgeous views along this loop track making for a great active wellness and a place to help you find perspective, should you be searching for it.
Wairoa Loop Track
Venture up to rewarding views of the Wairoa Reservoir and loop back through native NZ bush. Start at the Wairoa picnic site on Moumoukai Road.
Suspension Bridge Loop
As promised, this walk has a suspension bridge! Crossing the Wairoa stream at the beginning of the track. Park at the carpark for Wairoa Reservoir on Moumoukai Road and loop around through refreshing native New Zealand bushlands which takes a bit over an hours walk. Once you get to the connection with Wairoa-Cossey Track, take a right to loop around and follow the track back to the start. Meditate and give yourself a mental break from daily life here in the serene, peaceful bush track. There is picnic area for you to rest.
Hunua Ranges Mountain Bike Trails
Moumoukai Mountain Bike Skills Area
For a fun and safe opportunity to practice your mountain biking skills without being hours into a track in the bush, come here to Moumoukai mountain bike skills area to learn or to polish up your abilities! Located beside the Upper Mangatāwhiri campsite.
Valley Loop Track
Good for beginners, this track is considered easy. It even has fantastic places for a pit-stop to refuel with picnicking areas and rivers to dive into for a cool off before you finish your ride! Arrive at the Upper Mangatāwhiri campsite and commence the loop by following A R A road then Mangatangi Hill Road, Graeme White Road, Moumoukai Valley Road and Manning Road. There is a stream crossing towards the end, on Moumoukai Valley Road – Milne Stream – this is just before you turn left onto Manning road to loop back to the start. From this track there are many other networking short tracks and loops which vary in difficulty that you can check out. Head out here for some freedom, fun and mental respite.
