Bastion Point

Goodbye work week! Start your weekend with a stress-relieving, stunning sunset from Tāmaki Makaurau’s Bastion Point. Pack some dinner before making your way to Bastion Point; Walk out to the end of Orakei Wharf or to catch the best views either drive to Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Gardens, or park your car at Mission Bay and take a leisurely walk up the short path to the Gardens and viewing point. Bastion Point offers panoramic views of the harbour and all the way to the city lights which include the Sky Tower and the Harbour Bridge. Find a comfy spot with the grandest vistas, enjoy your meal and watch the light rays slowly fade away while the city comes to illuminated life.

Herne Bay 

Awaken your senses with a refreshing morning visit to Herne Bay. Located close to the CBD on the southwestern shore of the Waitemata Harbour, Herne Bay has many sandy little beaches with sweeping views, old, overhanging trees and is surrounded by beautiful homes. Take a dip in the water or bring your foam mat for a rejuvenating stretch or pilates session amidst the fresh morning air in a calm and relaxed spot.

Immerse yourself in some art and culture at the Auckland Art Gallery. Find a cosy spot amidst the greenery and enjoy your meal while surrounded by the park’s serene beauty.

Waiheke Island

Create some memories and hop on a ferry and escape to Waiheke Island for the afternoon! Here’s some fun and free options for an afternoon on Waiheke to immerse yourself in the island’s nature and beauty. 

  1. The island is surrounded by stunning beaches, such as the popular and accessible Oneroa Beach and Little Palm Beach. Take a dip, read your book, sun yourself or have a walk! The gorgeous views and relaxed atmosphere are a winning combination for weekend rejuvenation and relaxation.

  1. Visit the Waiheke Community Art Gallery and other local artists’ studios. Check out the art gallery’s current exhibitions and their shop featuring Waiheke and NZ artists’ handcrafted artworks with a huge range of talent, including ceramics, glass, jewellery, apparel, books and homewares.
  2. Don’t miss the opportunity to discover the regenerating Atawhai-Whenua Reserve. There are three native tracks, with the high routes offering breathtaking vistas of Matiatia Bay. As you explore, you may encounter the island’s native and protected wildlife, including Kererū, morepork, tūī, grey warbler, white-faced heron, long-finned eel, harrier hawks, and pukeko. Listen to the melodies of the local birdlife and spend some time soaking up the natural atmosphere.

Things to do in Auckland on a Winter Evening –

Candlelight Concert

Tawharanui Beach Stargazing

Winter is one of the best times of year for stargazing due to the long night hours. Pack your most indulgent snacks, a couple of blankets and your favourite person, take the hour and a half drive to Tawharanui Beach / Mona Lookout, relax and take in the incredible spectacle of our amazing night sky. A fun, relaxing way to cosy up and watch nature’s starry show.

Things to do in Auckland on a Summer Evening –

Movies in Parks or Silo Park

During the summer months, you’ll need a chilly bin and a few bags of ice for your drinks, a relaxing outdoor chair, a blanket and a few snacks – sorted! Set yourself up, to chill out and watch a free outdoor movie at Movies in Parks or Silo Park. Take your friends and unwind together watching a movie under the Tāmaki Makaurau starry sky.

Te Ara I Whiti – The Lightpath

Bike or walk along the glowing Pink Pathway. It showcases show-stopping nighttime scenery, with the beautifully illuminated pathway which circumnavigates the central city and can be completed on foot in around 2.5 hours. If you’re feeling thirsty or peckish halfway through, a little detour to check out the Victoria Park Market is a great option for a bite to eat or a cheeky drink.

Things to do in Auckland on Sunday

Takapuna Sunday Market

Start your Sunday at the Takapuna Sunday Market, where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast and coffee while browsing stalls of fresh, organic produce. Stock up on ingredients for a picnic lunch later in the day. 

Parnell Rose Garden 

Take a leisurely stroll around the beachfront Parnell Rose garden in the summer and autumn months when this place is in full, vibrant bloom. Wander down to Hobson Bay beach, take off your shoes and relax there for a while. You might even watch a train or two cruise by across the water from you.

Open in summer, the outdoor saltwater baths have options for all:

  • Fun kids’ in-pool playground and toddler area
  • Lap pool
  • Spas – separate family and adult spas
  • Outdoor green space overlooking Hobson Bay and the lovely little beach there, part of the Parnell Rose Garden 

Auckland Night Markets

Head to the Auckland Night Markets on North Wharf (Sundays) for an evening of culinary delight. Indulge in, and celebrate, a variety of international cuisines from local food vendors of all cultures, countries and backgrounds and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. 

Viaduct Harbour & Wynyard Quarter

While you’re there, take the opportunity to walk off your dinner along the City of Sails’ Viaduct Harbour & Wynyard Quarter. Make the most of your walk by discovering:

  • The best views of the Harbour Bridge and of the yachts themselves
  • Grab yourself a downloadable map, find and explore the local artworks on Tāmaki Makaurau’s waterfront
  • Head down and appreciate the green space of Daldy Street and then to the Daldy Street Community Garden – Pick yourself some fresh greens for your next meal from the green marked veggie boxes
  • Make your way back to Karanga Plaza – A place to rest, take in the city lights, the yachts and a wonderful view of Tāmaki Makaurau’s Sky Tower.
